The Daily Kriesa

In highschool, I had a calculus teacher, Mr. Kriesa (as in "crisis"). Like an arctic hare, he would grow out his beard in the winter months and shave it off in the spring. Everyday I would draw a picture of him in the corner of my notes, each with a different theme. I called it "The Daily Kriesa," and it went on for most of the year, and by the end you could see a clear progression in the growth of his beard. I had almost completely forgotten about it until one day last week when I was doodling at work, and came up with this gem. It's drawn from the grade school perspective that your teachers' lives revolve around the subject they teach (or at the very least, that they're actually interested in that subject). For your reference, the writing says:

"I feel it... I feel the calculus..."
"GYAH!! It's too much!"

I wasn't particularly good or bad enough at calculus that he'd remember me. But I do wonder if he remembers the Daily Kriesa..

Frogman

I've noticed that all the characters I make up are males. Maybe I should work on some female ones? Anyway, I drew this guy quite a while back. People who know me know that I loath/fear frogs like nothing else, but I like the idea of this sour looking dude who wears a frog suit... Or is it his skin? Is he half man half frog? Does he dress up like a frog to catch frogs to make balloons? Either way, he must resign himself to an amphibian life, and from the looks of it, he isn't too happy about it.

*On another note: Four days left in Japan.

None Like It Hot

Ugh. Sorry for the lack of updates... I'm leaving Japan in a week, and to say it's been a stressful month would be like saying the weather's been on the warm side. Sigh, yes, the rainy season has ended and it's now officially summer, the season of fireworks and festivals and school vacation... Oh, and it's fucking HOT. My god, it feels like the sun is punishing Japan. On Saturday it was already 27˚C (80˚F) at 7 in the morning! It's a small consolation I guess, that I know I'll soon be going back to the land of abundant and wasteful air conditioning. :(

Japanese with Rintaro

Today we're going to learn some Japanese. Here, Rintaro says: "Dozo." As in: "After you. Please take this bowling lane, I insist." Any questions? (Besides why are Japanese dudes and Johnny Depp the only people who can pull off long hair and nerd-o glasses.)

Ta... tarako?

I had a funny thought today about sumo wrestlers and kewpie dolls. I thought it'd be funny to have a sumo wrestler kewpie doll, but as I was drawing it, I realized they're essentially the same body.

Beard Rock

This is from a week or so ago. I had a lot of trouble with the colors, which is why I didn't post it sooner. I'm still not sure what I think.... Anyway, I was inspired to draw it after hearing about a rock band made up of old dudes that Mike saw at a concert. It made me think of Ents and then those ridiculous Norse death metal bands. What if these dudes have been rocking since the beginning of time? EPIC.

Strawberry Coma

Last weekend I finally went strawberry picking in Nirayama. The Japanese must truly be secret gluttons, because why else would anyone invent "all-you-can-pick-for 30-minutes"? My friends and I vowed to eat 100 each, which is quite a feat, but not how you'd expect... the challenge isn't the time limit, but rather how much room you have in your stomach. You get really, really full around the 70-strawberry mark; by the time you get to 100, you're basically fighting to eat through the pain. After 30 minutes, we staggered out of the greenhouse with stained fingers and strained bellies, and if given the chance, probably would have passed out in a strawberry field, forever (ba-dum ching!).

A page in the life

Ok, this is a semi cop-out because it's only a page from one of my sketchbooks. But I find these doodles pretty amusing and have no recollection of drawing any of it. Looks like I had birds on the brain that day...

Universal Traveler

Ah, travel. The sights! The smells! The characters you run across! I love people watching in general, but when you're travelling, it's like someone bringing a smorgasbord to your front door. And you end up find a lot of similarities between people. Some folks are really interesting and some are complete morons who you wonder how they managed to get to this side of the world when they should be choking on the flies falling into their stupidly gaping maws. Here are some sketches from the Cambodian leg of my Thai adventure.

On the left is a big Italian guy with a big round gut that I couldn't help but stare at on the bus ride from Poipet back to Bangkok. He was sporting a very impressive diamond ring and probably also had feet but I don't recall what they looked like. In the middle is a nice Englishman staying at our guesthouse in Siem Reap, with whom we shared a cab ride to Poipet. He told us stories about his carpenter son who "was not gifted in the brain cells" and his daughter working at a ski resort and her imminent descent into lazy alcoholism.

The girl on the right is my favorite, in that love-to-hate sort of way. I think she was from Austria, travelling with her friend and a perpetual scowl (debilitating underbite?). They were on the same bus as us on the way to Cambodia, and held the group up at the border by a good half hour. I did not appreciate this, as it was high noon and close to 40 degrees C, and Poipet is not a very happy town. A couple days later, as we waited at Aranyaprathet to go back to Bangkok, our bus group was delayed again. This time by an hour. "Two more, two more!" the driver kept telling us. "Wouldn't it be bizarre if those girls were the ones holding us up? Ha! Ha! But that would never happen because we live in a fair and just world, don't we?" I chuckled. Oh no. Oh yes! There they were, piling into the bus an hour after it should have left without their sorry asses. Now I'm officially allowed to hate them. I guess it would have been more fair to draw both of them, but I can't remember what her friend looked like and I don't particularly care.

The good folks at Splash

A quick sketch of a couple of the characters at the gym I go to. From left to right: Lady who teaches aerobics with mesmerizing abs. Old dude who always smiles at me. Tall guy with freaky blue eyes, also teaches aerobics and MAY or MAY NOT be gay (I'm just speculating here). Next, Kobayashi Senior, who speaks English and has thighs like tree trunks. Last, Kobayashi Jr (not related) who speaks English and wants to be a fireman.

DO YOU KNOW?

This was inspired by a guy I saw on (guess) TV, a segment called "Good Lookin Club." I have no idea what it was about (makeovers?), but there was a dude with a mohawk and an elaborate tattoo on the side of his shaved skull. Kakkoi, ne? It reminded me of a story my friend told me, where he was accosted on the bullet train by a belligerent, probably drunk Japanese man. In the heat of the argument, the guy showed him his tattoo, glared, and said, in measured out English: "DO YOU KNOW??" --implying that he was a yakuza. I'm pretty sure the guy on TV was not a yakuza, but he still looked cool.

Snap, Crackle, Gag

I normally don't drink milk. I'm one of the few people who are happy to crunch on a bowl of cereal sans the white stuff. But a couple of months ago, I got a package from my mom containing two huge bags of Rice Krispies, which were a welcome treat, as cereal in Japan is on the pricey side (for a ridiculously small amount, I might add). However, since I've started eating Rice Krispies, I've been forced to buy milk, because this is what happens when you don't.

Like a saltine.... Like a saltine.

Yama-chan

Sorry for the lack of updates lately. I was in Sapporo for the long weekend, enjoying some snow sculptures, frigid weather, and of course Ghengis-Ghengis-Ghengis Khan. This picture has nothing to do with Sapporo or Hokkaido, but it looks cold.I drew it last week, after watching a bizarre trivia show on TV called "Q-sama." A bunch of tv celebrities had to write kanji or were given trivia to solve in a set amount time, which isn't so unusual, but in the latter half of the show, they cut to a dock on a lake. Everyone had to pile onto a giant top floating in the water, one by one, without tipping it over. Of course it tipped and everyone fell into the (what looked like) freezing water, multiple times. I guess that was the comic relief? Anyway, I recognized one of the guys on the show, Yama-chan, who I saw on one of the New Years programs (he was sumo wrestling another dude). Kind of the your trademark stoic dude with glasses, but I dunno, I like his style. Here he is about to step off the floating block onto the top, probably dreading the inevitable.

Foooood!

Food pervades everything in Japan, especially television. Think of Iron Chef, and then think of every tv show as Iron Chef. Food's in your face all the freaking time. If there is no food, then it's not entertainment. Tonight I saw a show on the top ten conveyor belt sushi restaurants in the country. It was insane; there was a nigiri sushi with a 26cm long piece of toro. 26cm. That's my shoe size.

Anyway, I'm always awed/repulsed by everyone on tv stuffing their faces with food, usually in one bite (even the 26cm sushi). They just... stuff the entire thing in there. It's basically food porn.

PS: Sorry for my bad hiragana... It's supposed to say Umai! but I guess the "i" looks more like "ri"....

(Well, it's been Friday for me already, since I live in the future). Have a great weekend! Here's a scene of some marine creatures crashing an onsen.

Euro Trash

I felt like putting this up because I watched "Borat" tonight. This started out as a portrait of Mike, but ended up looking sleazier than I intended it to. So now he's a nameless Eurotrash gigolo who wants to making the carnal relations with the ladies.
